If there are two or more cations or anions present in the electrolyte, selective or preferential discharge favours it to be discharged at the particular electrode.

For example when Ag+ ions & H+ ions are present in the soln then Ag+ is           discharged as it is lower than H+ in the activity series.

Curiee: but y does it so happen? can u plz elucidate it a bit more?
Subhikshamurari: Please refer the example
Subhikshamurari: Ag+ & H+ are cations , so automatically there is a confusion of which should be discharged at cathode. Hence selective discharge occurs

it is due to the property of them which is selective discharge

Subhikshamurari: Due to the property of what?
Pragati111: selective discharge
Subhikshamurari: " property of them" do you mean the ions?
Pragati111: yes
Subhikshamurari: Thankyou :)
Pragati111: wc
Pragati111: mark as brainlist
