The Egyptian Arab historian al-Maqrīzī wrote in the 15th century that the nose was actuallydestroyed by a Sufi Muslim named Muhammad Sa'im al-Dahr. In 1378 CE, Egyptian peasants made offerings to the Great Sphinx in the hope of controlling the flood cycle, which would result in a successful harvest.

There are three theories behind the broken nose of Spinx of Giza.

One account tells in 1378 CE, peasants prayed to the Great Sphinx in the hope of controlling the flood cycle, that could have resulted successful harvest. Outraged by this blatant show of devotion, Sa'im al-Dahr destroyed the nose and was later executed for vandalism.

Other account related to the Great Nepoleon Bonaparte. Some claims that he ordered his men to use the sphinx as target practice for their guns, thus the broken nose.

The third theory is as, in fact, the nose was never present, either from the beginning or no-one ever knew, few historians claims.

However, all these theories have been conclusively debunked by historians and the mystery still remains
