In the 1980s and 1990s, they became endangered due to unlawful hunting. They are hunted for their enormously soft, light, and warm wool which is usually obtained after death. This wool is known as Shahtoosh (a Persian word meaning "king of fine wools"), is used to weave luxury shawls.
The gumbos, the meadows and glaciers, ceremonies and festivities are the some of the charms that attract tourists to Ladakh.
