* First of all, Buddhism had also emerged on the scene when Jainism had emerged. Both of them had nearly same ideology based on non violence. Due to this, the followers got divided between the two religions. This reduced popularity of Jainism upto some extent.
During one great famine in northern India, some of the Jain monks moved to southern India. .

* In the beginning, Jain monks followed principle of non violence and abstained from all vices. Later on, they also became corrupt and started accepting donations from rich sections of society which was against principles of Jainism. This also eroded confidence of people in Jainism.

* In ancient times, animals were killed by people for sacrifice as well as food. Jains viewed this killing of animals for food as cruelty and non violence. This led to unpopularity of Jainism among non vegetarian section of the society.
Later on, during the British period, many christian missionaries came to India. Due to their influence, many of the Jain families adopted Christianity. This led to decline in population of Jains in India
