The left front assumed power of West Bengal in 1977. They focused on rural population which was a major chunk of Bengal society. They gained support of rural population by introducing the Barga operation.
This was basically a land reform movement for enlisting the names of sharecroppers and gave them some legal protection against the landlords and increased their profit margin in their crops yield
