Stars twinkle because of turbulence in the atmosphere of the Earth. As the atmosphere churns, the light from the star isrefracted in different directions. This causes the star's image to change slightly in brightness and position, hence "twinkle.

The phenomena that causes stars to twinkle is atmospheric refraction .When a ray of light travels from one medium to another , it 'bends'. This phenomenon is reffered to as refraction. If it travels from rarer medium to denser medium, it bends towards the normal and if it travels from denser medium to rarer medium, it bends away from the normal. The speed through which it travels changes depending on the medium and therefore this bending occurs. Due to this bending, it appears that stars are twinkling..
