East India has entered into the pre-Monsoon season or what we say in local language as 'Kal Baisakhi'. The term Kal Baisakhi is associated with high-speed winds along with intense rain and thundershowers that originate in the Chota Nagpur Plateau.

During the hot weather period that is spanning from March to June, the regions in the Indo-Gangetic plains including the states like West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, parts of Odisha and Bangladesh witnesses violent thunderstorms that are locally known as Kal Baisakhi or Nor ‘westers.

It approaches slowly at first and then rapidly with a strong gust or squall. A low bank of dark cloud in the northwest region, the upper outline of which has the appearance of an arch is probably the initial emblem of nor ‘wester.

As per Skymet Weather, a high-pressure belt normally forms over the northwest Bay of Bengal feeding the moist winds over the already heating up Jharkhand, South Bihar, and adjoining areas. These moist winds get mixed with dry and warm winds thus resulting in the development of thunderclouds, especially towards late afternoon and evening.
