What is the reason that carbon atom forms only covalent compounds?

As carbon has only 4 electrons in it's valence shell, thus it can neither give nor take 4 electrons to any other element, Therefore it shares it electons with other elements forming covalent compounds.

It forms most with H and O as they all are much reactive.
