What is the reason that echidna and platypus lay eggs but are considered as mammals?

Echidna and platypus belongs to monotremata of mammalian. These are only egg laying mammals. Monotremes possesses mammalian features. In addition to this they have reptilian features. They are considered as primitive mammals.
