Most freshwater fishes could not survive long in seawater. This is due to osmotic reguation problem. It costs too much energy to pump out the salt, if the fishes have the relevant tissues/cells at all.

Some freshwater fishes are able to adjust, for example, Tilapia (It has got a new taxonomic name, but the name sticks.) Actually, some cultured Tilapia was transferred to seawater in later stages so the fish taste better and look better.

Some fishes migrate from freshwater to seawater, or vice versa, e.g., eels, salmon…They have no problem adjusting in different salinities.

Explanation:

the reason is that a fish living in fresh water is habitual of freshness of water , if a fish is placed in ocean it will die . It is only because ocean water is way more salty and somehow dirty .
