The common name and species name, punctatus (which means “spotted”) are derived from the reddish warts that cover the uppersides of the body. Bufo is Latin for “toad.” The Spanish word for toad is “sapo.” Red-spotted Toads occur from central Texas westward to southeast California and into Mexico and Baja California.
