An Incident ray is a ray of light striking the surface of a medium or object before getting reflected or refracted.
An emergent ray is the ray of light which travels past a object or medium after being refracted.
The relation between the two light rays are that always parallel to each other wherever and whenever they exist while maintaining a same angle between the incident and the reflected or refracted ray.

The perpendicular distance between the original path of incident ray and the emergent ray coming out of the glass slab is called lateral displacement of the emergent ray of light and the angle which the emergent ray makes with the normal is called the angle of emergence.
