Mythology is a collection of tales that generally explain the past: these may have a basis in fact but are embroidered to explain the present.
Many are fables, tales to demonstrate a point.
History is an attempt to uncover and create a factual account of the past.
A classic myth is that of Robert the Bruce, who after being beaten by the English, hid in a cave, a desperate fugitive.
He watched a spider spinning a web, although it was stormy and the web was destroyed before completion.
This did not deter the spider, who just started again from scratch.
6 times the web was destroyed, but on the 7th she succeeded.
Robert the Bruce watch the spider and was inspired to try again.
This is a classic myth: to give the moral that you must persevere in the face of advertisity.
The History is that Robert the Bruce was beaten and did make a successful comeback at Bannockburn, but the rest is a flight of fancy.
