we have to find the relation between two successive discounts of 5 % and 39/4 %.

solution : we know, when two successive discounts of x % and y %.

single equivalent discount = (x + y - xy/100) %

here if we assume two successive discounts of 5 % and 5 % .

so single equivalent discount = 5 % + 5% - 5 × 5/100 %

= (10 - 1/4) %

= 39/4 %

Therefore two successive discounts of 5% and 5% is 39/4 %
