Capitalism as an economic system is based on supply and demand, promoting the freedom of each individual to achieve wealth while limiting social programs that support those who can't meet their own economic needs. Realism in art and literature was a 19th century reaction to the Romantic Period, and attempted to depict life as it really is without embellishment or sentimentality. Both concepts emphasize the basic principle of give and take, the natural workings of life without using emotions in decision making. Yet realism in literature in particular was often focused on criticizing the downside of capitalism as a governing principle: human suffering of those left behind economically and socially. There is also an artistic movement called Capital Realism, which is art based on commodities, similar to the Pop Art paintings of the 1960s.
