How are Entropy and Spontaneity related?

The second law of thermodynamics states that the total entropy of the universe always increases for a spontaneous process. The net change in entropy of the system, ∆S, equals the sum of the entropy created during the spontaneous process and the change in energy associated with the heat flow.

EXTRA :

  • The total change in entropy of an isolated system and the change in entropy of the surrounding is always equal.
  • The change in entropy for the cyclic process is 0. This means that the Gibbs energy of the system is decreased during the process. ΔG < 0, the process is spontaneous.
