Màss and Inertia :

  • Inertia is a physical quantity that determines the movement of a particle until and unless a force acts on it.

  • Inertia is directly proportional to the màss of the object.

  • For example : when we throw 2 ball (one plastic and the other tennis) with equal speed, the tennis ball with higher màss will have higher inertia.

Graphical Derivation:

  • The displacement of the object will be given by the area of the trapezium in the velocity-time graph:

d = area \: of \: trapezium

 \implies \: d =  \dfrac{1}{2} (u + v) \times t

 \implies \: d =  \dfrac{1}{2} (u + u + at) \times t

 \implies \: d =  \dfrac{1}{2} (2u + at) \times t

 \implies \: d =  \dfrac{1}{2} (2ut + a {t}^{2} )

 \implies \: d =  ut +  \dfrac{1}{2} a {t}^{2}

[Hence derived]
