One is the peasant named Pahom and the other are the Bashkirs. Pahom, in his greed wanted more and more land and had a materialistic way of looking at land, whereas Bashkirs were wise enough to look at the land in a very traditional way.

At the end, Pahom loses both, the land and his life. So, the author in that context says that a person needs only that much amount of land, in which he could be buried easily after his death.
