Quora If you mean petroleum (aka oil for producing gasoline, etc.) the average density is about 800Kg/m3 or 0.8g/cm3. In comparison to water its specific gravity is 0.8. Looking online I see oils ranging from 0.7 to 0.98g/cm3 so most are less dense than water .
