The mangroves are the plants which grow in marshy areas. The plant roots cannot survive and respire in these marshy land due to less concentration of oxygen. The plants have a special type of roots called as pneumatophores. These are finger-like projections of roots which arise in an upward direction and possess lenticels. The air is taken through the pores of lenticels and respiration is carried out by the plant cells.
