Earthworms have a mucilagenous layer over there outer surface or skin which makes the gases to easily dissolve from air and enter the body.
Earthworm respires through its skin and exchanges its gases from there only.
If an earthworm is kept in a dry land it will die because the wetness over its surface will be lost. Which will make the earthworm hard to breathe with time and eventually die miserably.
And thats also the reason why putting salt over it will also make its surface dry and it will die.
