Starch is the most common type ofreserve food in green plants and is of the highest importance in their metabolism. However, due to its insoluble nature starch must be digested, i.e., made soluble, before it can be used.

  • The process of storing of food in ordered to use it during undesirable condition is called as reserved food. Storage of food is not only done by animals and humans but also by the plants too.
  • Plants need sunlight, water, and air to carry put photosynthesis process through which it prepares it own food. When any one of this is not available it will lead to hindrance in the process.  
  • For example during winter as the amount of sunlight received is not sufficient to carry out photosynthesis. In such condition the plant utilizes the reserve food stored in the form of starch.
