Voltmeter is used to measure the voltage difference or the potential difference across the terminals of a conductor or electrical device.
It is connected in parallel with the device. Since, we do not want to alter the voltage or current in the existing circuit, the resistance should be equal to infinity. So no current flows through the voltmeter in the ideal case.
