  • The stone will start to move in a straight line along the direction which is tangent to the circle at the point of release.

  • While the stone is in circular motion, the thread provides the necessary force to keep the stone in its circular path.
  • If the thread is released, the necessary force is no longer provided to the stone.
  • In this situation, due to inertia of direction(tendency of a body to move in its original direction of motion) the stone will start to move in a straight line.
  • This straight line will be the tangent to circle at the point where the stone is released.
  • As such, if the stone is released at different positions, direction of tangent will be different and hence direction of motion will be different.
