shear stress = shear force/ cross sectional area

it is given that, shear force = 17000N

and shear stress = 60 N/m²

so, 60 = 17000/cross sectional area

cross sectional area of rivet = 17000/60 = 1700/6

let diameter of rivet is d

then, π(d/2)² = 1700/6

22/7 × d²/4 = 1700/6

d² = (1700 × 7 × 4)/(22 × 6) = 360.6

d = 18.98 ≈ 19m

Shear Force = 17,000 N.

Shear Stress = 60 N/mm² = 60 × 1000 × 1000 N/m²

Shear Strees = Shear Force/Area of the Cross-section.

∴ 60 × 10⁶ = 17000/Area of the Cross section.

∴ Area of Cross-section = 0.00028 m²

Now, Diameter can be only calculated for circle, hence shape of the river is Circular.

∴ Area = πr²

∴  0.00028  = 22/7 × r²

∴ r² = 0.00028 × 7/22

∴ r² = 0.00009

∴ r = 0.0095

∴ r = 0.0095 m.

Now, diameter = 2 × r = 2 × 0.0095 ≈ 0.0189 m = 1.89 cm = 18.99 mm...

Hope it helps.
