What was A.O Hume's role in the formation of the Indian National Congress?

A. O. Hume is known as the founder of INC.

But a closer examination reveals that the role of Hume was just as an organiser.

Formation of pan india level nationalist organisation was unavoidable as the process of formation of regional organisation was completed.

Such a organisation was bound to come up with or without hume. Hume just facilitated it.

Hume was an enlightened imperialist.

He wanted to save british indian empire by giving more political powers to indians as he was concerned about the mass revolt.

He was triggered by the actions of S. N. Banerjee, a radical who formed Indian National Conference a 1st pan india political nationalist organisation in 1883.

He was concerned that, if such a organisation is formed under a radical leader it will be harmful for British indian empire.

So, he founded INC in Dec. 1885.

Indian nationalists were aware that hume was imperialist, they used hume as a lighting conductor to save INC from british suppression.
