What is the role of air bubbles in ganongs potometer

The movement of the air bubble over the measuring scale in the potometer, indicates the amount of water absorbed but the plant in the potometer, which is almost equal to the water lost by the plant..

the air bubbles in Gangongs potometer is to mark the progress of transpiration and absorption of water by the freshly cut leafy twig which must be devoid of any roots .
