Due to anomolous expansion of water,water at the surface changes into ice,which floats over the water below.Ice is a poor conductor of heat and acts like a blanket that protects the bottom layers of the water from the cold air above. This is how anomolous behaviour of water helps in preserving aquatic life in cold climate.
