→Soon after, her father was assassinated and the country came under military rule.

→Burma did not see any development and became the impoverished country under military rule.

→1988 she led the prodemocracy movement.

→In 1988 thousands of students- protesters were killed.

→Since then she has become the central figure in the protests and struggle for establishment of democracy in Burma.

→When the election were held in 1990 her political party (NLD) won 80%of seats, though she was in prison. The military refused to hand over power to her.

→She was not permitted to attend the funeral of her husband or meet her two sons.

→Finally economic sanctions were used by the International Organisation to bring world-wide pressure on the rulers to extend civil liberties and usher in a democratic government.

→She was released from house arrest on 13th November 2010.

→Suu Kyi's struggle is one of the most extraordinary examples of civil courage in Asia in recent decades. She has become an important symbol in the struggle against oppression.

→In 2011 Suu Kyi's NLD contested in the elections have won 43 out of 45 parliamentary seats which were vacant.
