The Last Leaf'' is a poignant short story about a young female artist and an elderly artist. The girl is dying of pneumonia and watches a plant in the window opposite slowly die, beginning to relate her own decline to that of the plant. The last leaf never drops, however, in the girl's view, as the old artist paints a last leaf for her. He dies from pneumonia himself after being out in the cold to make this painting. The message here is that the smallest sacrifice can not only have a great price but can accomplish great good

The two observations made by the doctor about Johnsy were that the latter seemed to have made up her mind that she won’t get well; and that, if she did not want to live, medicines would also not be able to cure her.
