Bt cotton forms protein crystal during a particular phase of their growth. These crystal contain a toxic insecticidal protein.

Bt toxin protein exist as inactive prototoxin but once an insect ingest the inactive toxin it converts into an active toxin due to alkaline pH of the midgut which solubilise the crystal.
