Answer:

We know that oxygen is the supporter and carbon dioxide is non supporter of combustion .

Also carbon dioxide is heavier than oxygen .

so during combustion when we use fire extinguisher which contains co2 , it covers the substance which was burning and breaks the contact between the surface of that object and oxygen.

Hence, this prevents the object to burn further.
