Caste were originally created based on the professions that people followed and did in their lives. A cobbler did shoes and chappals. A potter did make pots. A fisher did catch fish and sell them. A businessman caste comprised of those who had money and did business. A brahman learnt veda, shastra, knowledge and helped perform rites, puja and prayers.
Castes were the basis of the composition of the society. They defined the roles of different people in the society so that all tasks needed in a society could be done.
