Horizontal and Vertical Communication

Explanation:

Horizontal Communication refers to the communication among employees on the same level. This communication is also known as peer-to-peer communication. It involves exchange of information or ideas across various departments on the same level. This type of communication helps in the coordination between various positions in the organization at the same level, which is brought about through cooperation and mutual consultation.

While Vertical Communication refers to that type of communication which happens between a superior and a subordinate. This type of communication helps in the synchronization of activities and efforts of the employees at different levels in the organization.

It can be further divided into :

  • Downward Communication is when superiors (leaders and managers) share information with subordinates (employees). It helps in updating workforce and employees about new plan and strategies.
  • Upward Communication is when subordinates (employees) report their superiors (leaders and managers). It helps in avoiding any chaos, unethical behavior or illegal activity.
