Breathing In (Inhalation) When you breathe in, or inhale, yourdiaphragm contracts (tightens) and moves downward. This increases the space in your chest cavity, into which your lungs expand. The intercostal muscles between your ribs also help enlarge the chest cavity.

diaphragm is the muscular sheet forming the floor of the chest cavity
during inhalation it moves down increasing the space so that more air could be inhaled
during exhalation it return s back to its original place...
