Diaphragm contracts and relaxes during respiration .

When you are inhaling air you can actually see your diaphragm move downwards . When it moves downward it increases the volume of thoracic cavity in anterio- posterio axis . As you know boyle's law pressure is inversely proportional to volume . Thereby when volume increases in anterio- posterio axis pressure decreases . It decreases to such an extent that the atmospheric pressure outside becomes higher than that inside ,( and since we know gases move from a region of high pressure to low pressure ) therefore air will move into your lungs from outside . In a nutshell diaphragm helps in creating pressure gradients which in turn are responsible for respiration.
