the outermost layer of the cells in a plant is called epidermis. it's the protective layer in plants.
basically epidermis is made up of single cells but it may be thicker in very dry habitats (to prevent loss of water)
epidermis acts as an outer covering of a plant which protects all the parts of the plant. the main role of epidermis is to protect all parts. that's why it has a continuous layer of cells without any intercellular space.
we all know about stomata, tiny pores present in the leaf which helps in transpiration and gas exchanges.. the stomata is present in the epidermis of leaf.
some epidermial cells are also present in roots, and helps in absorption of water..
plants in desert area have waxy and thick outer covering.. that's epidermis.. it's so because in desert area, there is no moisture and epidermis helps to prevent loss of water in plants.
