Epiglottis is a flap-like structure which covers the pharynx. During swallowing of food the epiglottis covers the windpipe to prevent any food substance from entering into windpipe. During the process of breathing it opens up.
Diaphragm plays an important role. It regulates the mechanism of breathing. Diaphragm is a dome shaped structure dividing the body into thoracic and abdomen. During inspiration , the diaphragm contracts and becomes flat, thereby increasing the thoracic volume and decreasing the pressure inside it. Due to the pressure difference b/w surroundings and thoracic cavity, the air is pushed into the lungs. During the process of expiration, the diaphragm relaxes and becomes dome shaped again and air is forced out from the lungs due to pressure difference.
