During the extraction of iron from haematite ore, limestone acts as a flux. Limestone decomposes froming CaO which reacts with silica forming slag.

During the roasting of pyrite ore, a mixture of FeO and Cu2O is obtained. The role of silica in the metallurgy of copper is to remove the iron oxide obtained during the process of roasting as 'slag'.

The calcium silicate melts and runs down through the furnace to form a layer on top of the molten iron. It can be tapped off from time to time as slag.
