What is the role of graphite rod in the electrometallurgy of aluminium?

In the electrolysis, the graphite can be used as anode and graphite-lined iron can be used as cathode.

If any metal is used other than the graphite as anode, then O2 would be liberated.

Therefore, graphite is used to prevent the formation of the O2 at anode.

Apart from that, graphite is cheaper than metals.

Hey !!

In this process, a fused mixture of alumina, cryolite and fluorspar (CaF₂) is electrolysed using graphite an anode and steel vessel with lining of carbon as cathode. During electrolysis, Al is liberated at the cathode whereas CO and CO₂ are liberated at the anode.
