Gypsum plays a very important role in controlling the rate of hardening of thecement. During the cement manufacturing process, upon the cooling of clinker, a small amount ofgypsum is introduced during the final grinding process.Gypsum is added to control the “setting of cement”.

Gypsum decreaces the rate of setting of cement. It increaces the time required for setting of cement. Various silicates present in the for. of gels in the cement are slowly converted to a hard mass in the presence of added gypsum.
