Hydrochloric acid is the only acid secreted by parietal cells of the stomach. This provides an acidic environment for many digestive enzymes to become active. Enzymes like pepsinogen get activated by HCl into pepsin which acts on proteins and brings about their digestion. HCl along with gastric lipase emulsifies the lipids present in our food. HCl kills most of the pathogenic bacteria entering the digestive tract along with our food and water.
