What is the role of HCl , pepsin and mucus in the human digestive system?

Pepsin and HCl breaks the proteins into smaller peptides.

Mucus helps from highly excoriation of HCl and protects us from harmful bacterias.

HCl- creates an acidic medium necessary for the proper functioning of the               enzyme, pepsin .
        It also softens the food and disinfects food by killing germs and bacteria.
Mucus- It protects the inner lining of the stomach from the action of Hcl under
         normal conditions.
Pepsin- It helps in digestion of the proteins present in food to form smaller               molecules
