A hilum is a scar on the seed coat where the seed is attached to the pod
and micropyle is a small opening in the seed coat which absorbs water

Functions of micropyle:

(i) When soaked in water, the seeds absorb water mainly through the micropyle and make it available to the embryo for germination.

(ii) It helps in diffusion of respiratory gases for the growing embryo.
