In stomach, the internal walls secrets hydrochloric acid, pepsin enzyme and mucus it releases in the form of gastric juice. Hydrochloric acid change the medium of food into acidic. so, that pepsin enzyme may work on it. Now, pepsin enzyme breaks down the the larger molecules of protein into smaller molecules and mucus saves the stomach from ulceration caused by hydrochloric acid.
