Gram, peas, moong, beans etc.,are legumes. The roots of these crops have nodules on them. These nodules have symbiotic bacteria bacteria. These bacteria have property to convert atmospheric nitrogen to nitrates. Nitrates are soluble in water amd cab provide nitrogen to plants. Thus, nitrogen of the soil can be replenished by legumes and they play role of fertilizers.
