For the absorption of nitrogen by plants, the two atoms must be segregated which requires a tremendous blast of energy to break the two molecules of nitrogen and for converting them to a compound that can be used by the plants. For this separation of two molecules of nitrogen, the role of lightning comes into play.

  • When the blasts occur due to lightning through the atmosphere it results in the breaking apart of nitrogen molecules which allows them to react with oxygen in the air for the formation of nitrogen oxides. These two nitrates are dissolved by the rain which then carries them to Earth and into the soil. Nitrates are deemed a “super fertilizer.” Hence, lightning helps for fertilization of the soil and enables plants to green up sooner.
