Answer:

the mercury shows linear temperature expantion . This is main reason to use of mercury in the thermometers. The water having the property of condensation but the mercury have no condensation property so the mercury will give exact values compared to water.

What is the role of mercury in a thermometer?

A.In a mercury thermometer, a glass tube is filled with mercury and a standard temperature scale is marked on the tube. With changes in temperature, the mercury expands and contracts, and the temperature can be read from the scale. Mercury thermometers can be used to determine body, liquid,

A. Water cannot be used in thermometer because of its higher freezing point and lower boiling point than other liquids . If water is used in a thermometer , it will start phase change at 0oC and 100oC and will not measure temperature , out of this range .

This a small answer with explanation

Mercury has quite a few advantages in a thermometer, but other liquids, including water can be used. For low temperature thermometers died alcohol is a better bet because mercury freezes at -39C but that illustrates one reason why mercury is good. ... Freeze a water based thermometer and it will break.
