The role of muscles of the stomach wall in our digestive system are:

  • The stomach is the part of the digestive system where the digestion of food takes place.
  • The stomach has glands such as the liver, pancreas, intestine etc.
  • For the digestion of food, certain muscles are present which allow proper mixing of food and enzymes.
  • Rugae lining of the stomach increases the surface area or volume of the stomach for more absorption of food and increases the size of the stomach.
  • A longitudinal layer of the stomach contributes to peristalsis while circular muscle facilitates the movement of food into the duodenum of the small intestine due to the presence of a pyloric sphincter in that region.
