Newspaper played a vital role in criticising British government in India.The unscrupulous laws and injustice done to the common people were openly written in newspaper.Newspaper like Kesari, Amrita Bazar Patrika  etc were very active throughout the freedom struggle in generating the feeling of national consciousness among the people. newspaper became the medium for arousing, mobilising, consolidating public opinion. British policy and administration was thoroughly criticised through the newspapers. The ill effects of the British rule created a social awakening among the people which became possible because of newspaper.

Role of newspaper in the indian struggle for independence :

Print Technology and newspaper were introduced in India after the British arrived. It became the first mass media of circulating information and knowledge. The role of newspaper in Indian struggle can be expressed through following inferences :

1) The first Marathi Newspaper 'Darpan' published news regarding the accounts of expenditure from the administrative divisions of East India Company and achievements of Raja Ram Mohan Roy in England.

Such information led to nationalistic awareness necessary for struggle for independence.

2) Other newspapers like Kesari and Maratha spoke about social and political issues of the pre independence period. Kesari began to publish articles about the nation wide situations, books in native languages and politics in England. Thus, The newspaper accelerated the struggle for independence.
